Sam Soverel Wins 2019 Poker Masters Main Event, Purple Jacket

Sam Soverel made seven of ten final tables at the Poker Masters, including a Main Event victory, en route to claiming the Purple Jacket.

Soverel ruled Main Event end-game

Sam Soverel won the Poker Masters $50,000 Main Event late Thursday night, capping off one of the most dominant weeks and a half in recent poker memory. In addition to the $680,000 purse for the victory, Soverel also earned the Purple Jacket as the top points earner for the series.

It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Soverel would win and as it turned out, it was

Soverel had a sizeable chip lead going into heads-up play in the Main Event against Chris Hunichen. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Soverel would win and as it turned out, it was. Holding Q-T and a 5,670,000 to 1,130,000 chip lead, Soverel moved all-in, putting Hunichen himself all-in. It was apparent that Hunichen didn’t want to put his tournament life on the line with pocket Deuces, but he realized he didn’t have much choice at that point and called.

It was a statistical coin-flip. A Queen appeared on the flop, the turn and river were of no help to Hunichen, and Soverel was crowned the Poker Masters Main Event champ.

Purple Jacket race was a runaway

The Poker Masters, held at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, consisted of ten tournaments. Sam Soverel made the final table in seven of them. He won one other tournament: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha.

Overall, Soverel cashed for $1,396,800 throughout the Poker Masters and won an additional $100,000 for capturing the Purple Jacket.

Soverel ran over the competition so completely that he did not even need to receive any points for his Main Event victory. If his 350 points were stripped from his record, he still would have ended up with 810 points, 180 more than the co-runners-up, Kahle Burns and Chance Kornuth. Burns and Kornuth would have still needed another second place finish in a tournament to beat Soverel in that case.

As it stood, Soverel finished the Poker Masters with 1,160 points, nearly the combined total of Burns and Kornuth, who each amassed 630 points.

Soverel has worked on his tournament skills

After his triumph, Soverel spoke with Poker Central, reflecting on how his confidence has grown recently. He said: “A lot of the guys I thought were really good I saw make mistakes online recently and I actually think now that the playing field is a lot more level than I originally thought.”

used to feel like he was at a “disadvantage” against many elite tournament players

Soverel went on to say that he used to feel like he was at a “disadvantage” against many elite tournament players, but after his online observations, he felt much better about how he compared.

As primarily a cash game player, Soverel noted that he was not as well-versed in some aspects of tournament strategy as he could have been. After further study, he shored up those weaknesses and now feels he has an advantage because of his live poker experience.

PokerStars Launches Two Novelty Cash Games: Deep Water Hold’em and Tempest Hold’em

PokerStars Tempest Hold'em table

PokerStars has introduced its latest pair of limited-time novelty cash games, Deep Water Hold’em and PokerStars Tempest Hold’em.

Both games are temporary

On Wednesday, PokerStars introduced two new novelty cash games: Deep Water Hold’em and PokerStars Tempest Hold’em.

The pair follows in PokerStars’ recent tradition of limited-time cash games, with titles such as Split Hold’emShowtime Hold’em, and Unfold having all come and gone.

Deep Water and Tempest come on the heels of PokerStars’ decision to jettison Power Up, its hybrid poker/deck-building eSports product. Power Up was intended to be a permanent game, but it lasted two years.

Some features identical

Deep Water and Tempest were introduced together because both temporary cash games are Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em at their core. The most noticeable change from standard Hold’em is that, instead of two blinds, there are three.

Deep Water and Tempest add the Giant Blind, which is twice the value of the Big Blind.

In addition to the Small Blind and Big Blind, Deep Water and Tempest add the Giant Blind, which is twice the value of the Big Blind. The player to the left of the Big Blind posts the Giant Blind.

For example, one level of stakes that can be found in the lobby is $0.25/$0.50/$1.00. In both games, everybody posts an ante before the hand starts. But in another twist, if the hand does not go to showdown, the ante increases for the next hand. It increases again if there is no showdown on the next hand, up to a maximum ante size. In the previous blinds example, the ante starts at $0.10 and increases $0.10 if the hand does not reach showdown.

Deep Water is for poker players

Where the two games diverge is in how much poker one gets to play in each. Deep Water is a deep-stacked game, which explains the clever title. The minimum buy-in for a Deep Water game is 50 times the Giant Blind. The maximum is 150 times the Giant Blind. In a $0.25/$0.50/$1.00 game, that’s a buy-in range of $50 to $150.

In a blog post explaining the games, The Stars Group Managing Director Severin Rasset said: “Deep Water is a great opportunity to develop a new way of thinking about NLHE and the combination of three blinds, escalating antes and deep buy-in is sure to shake things up!”

Tempest is for gamblers

Tempest is the opposite, being an extreme short-stacked game. Players can only buy-in for 5 to 10 times the Giant Blind. This alone automatically means there is much less room for poker decisions and strategy than in Deep Water.

even less room to maneuver in Tempest

But there is even less room to maneuver in Tempest because of the other feature: the game is all-in or fold. As it sounds, the only moves a player can make pre-flop are to push all of their chips into the middle or fold their hole cards. That’s it. There is no post-flop play.

In order to keep pots manageable and not let someone who goes on a lucky streak overwhelm the table, all-in bets are capped at an amount equal to the maximum buy-in. So, in a $0.25/$0.50/$1.00 Tempest game, even if a player has built their stack to $60, they can still only go “all-in” for $10.

win365 poker Modifies BLAST Poker Game Structure

Changes to jackpot sit-and-go structure and payouts
win365poker recently revamped its BLAST Poker offering, the online poker room’s version of the popular jackpot sit-and-go format. The changes involve both the structure of the game itself and the payout tables.

888 introduced BLAST Poker in 2016 in response to competitors like PokerStars and Winamax, who already had jackpot sit-and-gos for some time. The games are quick and appeal to recreational players who might not have the time to participate in extended poker sessions.

From four- to three-handed
The change win365 players will notice immediately is that BLAST games are now three-handed, matching the standard around the industry. BLAST was unique among jackpot sit-and-gos in that they were four-handed from launch.

The reason for the adjustment, according to an win365poker rep on Two Plus Two, was for the “games to start faster”.

BLAST was unique among jackpot sit-and-gos in that they were four-handed from launch

The other distinctive feature of BLAST Poker remains intact. After a few minutes – the duration varies based on the prize pool multiplier – players are automatically put all-in.

Prize pool multipliers adjusted
The other modification to the BLAST Poker game is less apparent but significant nonetheless. win365 modified the prize pool multipliers, increasing the number of different multipliers from six to seven.

Up until this point, the possible prize pool multipliers were 2x, 5x, 10x, 100x, 1,000x, and 10,000x. With the new structure, the 1,000x has been removed, and both a 3x and 25x multiplier have been added.

The result of this is that the prizes are now skewed downward. Using the $5 BLAST games as an example, the chances of hitting the top prize multiplier is now just 1 in 1,000,000, rather than 10 in 1,000,000. That is still close to impossible, but the probability is now just one tenth of what it was. The 100x multiplier is down from 400 in 1,000,000 to 75 in 1,000,000 and, of course, the 1,000x is gone.
Much of the 10x and 5x probability has been shifted down to the 3x, and some has gone to the 2x.

Average multiplier decreased
The expected value of the prize pool multiplier in a $5 BLAST Poker game is now 2.742x, a steep drop from the 3.656x it was before.

It is a similar situation at higher buy-in levels. The $30 BLAST games, for instance, now have an expected multiplier of 2.797x versus 3.733x previously.

it is now actually in line with win365 competitors

The reduction in the average prize pool multiplier looks bad at first read, but it is now actually in line with win365 competitors. For example, looking at the $5 Spin & Go at PokerStars, the expected multiplier is 2.790x. At the $25 and $50 buy-ins (there is no $30), the expected value is 2.820x.

The decrease is likely directly related to the drop in players from four to three. The games will go faster, so the prize pool distribution needs to be adjusted accordingly.

GGNetwork Launches All-In or Fold Bingo

Poker player shoving all his chips into the pot

The GGNetwork has introduced All-in or Fold Bingo, a new bonus feature tacked on to its All-in or Fold poker games.

Up to 800 big blinds can be won

Asia-facing online poker network GGNetwork has introduced a new feature to its All-in or Fold (AoF) games to give players a shot at additional cash prizes. The add-on, called All-in or Fold Bingo, awards players up to 800 big blinds from a running prize fund.

AoF is effectively a side game, overlaid on top of the current poker table window. Contrast that to Short Deck Hold’em, launched a month ago, which is its own poker variant. AoF Bingo does not appear to be optional, though players do not have to actively participate in the bingo game to win.

AoF is effectively a side game, overlaid on top of the current poker table window

The GGNetwork is made up of 14 member poker rooms, including its flagship site, GGPoker. GGPoker recently made waves by signing Poker Hall of Famer Daniel Negreanu as an ambassador.

Hole cards are the bingo balls

When players load an All-in or Fold table, a three-by-three bingo card now appears on the left side of the window, below the left-most seat. Each of the nine squares on the bingo card is represented by one of the 52 cards in the poker deck.

When a player wins a hand, spaces on the bingo card are marked off if they match either or both of the player’s hole cards. The hand must go to showdown to count for All-in or Fold Bingo.

If a player completes two lines on the bingo card within 30 hands at the table, that player wins cash instantly. If a player does not like the look of the bingo card, it can be refreshed if there are fewer than 20 hands left. The hand limit then resets. Ties do not count as wins.

The poker room takes a fee of 0.1 big blinds per hand to fund the AoF Bingo prize pool.

In All-in or Fold Hold’em games, prizes for winning Bingo are 8, 20, 40, 80, or 800 big blinds. The exact amount is determined at the time of the win, based on a probability table.

The 8 big blind prize will come up 73.7% of the time and 20 big blinds will be awarded 21.5% of the time. Thus, the vast majority of the prizes will be those two amounts. The top prize, 800 big blinds, has just a 0.30% chance of hitting.

The prize amounts are for AoF Omaha are exactly half that of Hold’em. The 4 big blind and 10 big blind prizes have probabilities of 63.5% and 30.1%, respectively. The top prize has a 0.40% chance.

Just one decision to make

All-in or Fold games are designed to appeal to recreational players. The severely reduced decision-making brings the playing field closer to even between skilled and novice players. Hands also go by very quickly, making games more exciting.

players only have two options pre-flop: shove all-in or fold

In the four-handed AoF Hold’em games, players only have two options pre-flop: shove all-in or fold, as the name suggests. The buy-in is just 8 big blinds, so no single pot is make-or-break. But since entire stacks are won and lost almost every hand, reloads can add up. Players can take money off the table whenever they would like.

All-in or Fold Omaha is slightly different. Players still only have the option to move all-in or fold, but the flop is dealt immediately, so everyone sees the first three cards before having to make a decision. The buy-in for AoF Omaha is 4 big blinds.
